Korea recently established the Corruption Investigation Office For High-ranking Officials (CIO) to reinforce the investigation of corruption crimes committed by high-ranking public officials. As the CIO was established after decades of fierce debate, Koreans hope it will protect justice through professional investigation that maintains political neutrality. With its establishment, the CIO has become one of the most controversial topics in Korea due to its novel nature as a new investigating system never seen before in the nation. In this lecture, Mr. Jung will explain several legal issues related to the CIO. These issues include political neutrality of the CIO, the relationship and jurisdiction between the CIO and Prosecution, and the organization to improve the investigative capability of the CIO.
