CALL FOR PAPERS CLOSES JANUARY 26th, 2026

The editors of Ufahamu: A Journal of African Studies are currently accepting submissions for Volume 44, Issue 1. This innovative issue seeks to bring various disciplines and methodologies in conversation with one another through new submissions including, but not limited to:

 

Essays
Book reviews
Arts (can include visual arts, poetry, fiction, art criticism, exhibition reviews, etc.)

 

This call seeks abstracts that directly engage with the theme Afrofuturism and investigate the following questions: How can we look to the past in order to find a better future? How can theoretical frameworks from Africa and African Diaspora heighten how we examine the past, present, and future? We encourage interested authors from across academic disciplines and creative fields to submit abstracts for essays, book reviews, and visual arts that expand on these questions and probe others that address themes such as:

Activist-Intellectualism
African Epistemologies
Afrofuturism, Black Speculative Futures, Archives and Manuscripts, Material Culture, Book History Artistic Resistance, Black Arts Movement
Black Ecologies
Black Feminist Theory/Approaches
Black Freedom
Black Geographies
Black Marxism
Diasporic History (Atlantic, Caribbean, Indian Ocean World)
Genocide
Indigeneity, Indigenous Knowledges Migration, Immigration, Refugee Border States, Nation States Ancient African Studies, Antiquity Pan-Africanism, De-Colonization
Premodern Studies
Saharan History
Urban Spaces, Popular Culture, Adaptations
